Screenprint - ‘Coming out of lockdown’
About the artist
Art has always been an obsession. I find it totally absorbing and fulfilling. It uplifts the spirit - I am never happier than when I am doing something creative. Fellow artists will understand how I feel.
I began screenprinting at the Mary Ward Centre in Central London in the 1980s, with oil-based inks and toxic fumes filling the studio. Things have moved on a lot since then. For the past five years I have been a member of the Sonsoles Print Studio in Peckham.
In the 1990s, an overseas work placement took me to Australia and I decided to try something different. I reasoned that if I could master life-drawing, then I could draw and paint anything. With hindsight, I’m not sure that is true, but I have been drawing and painting the human figure ever since. For more than a decade I have been a member of Hesketh Hubbard Art Society, which is part of the Federation of British Artists. Most Fridays I am at Mall Galleries, drawing and painting wonderful models, surrounded by inspiring artists. If you are interested in joining us, you can find more details at Hesketh Hubbard Art Society
I also love painting landscapes en plein air. It’s a huge challenge because the light keeps changing, but I love the immediacy of the artwork and the (usually) nice comments you get from passers-by.
I have benefited from the wisdom and guidance of numerous art teachers and other artists over the years. I am now a trustee at the Federation of British Artists and contribute to the oversight and strategic leadership of Mall Galleries.
