Nude figure

I began life drawing and painting in the 1990s, when I was living in Australia. I got the bug and have been doing it ever since. All the images in this section of the gallery were done in 2-hour life drawing sessions, although a number were completed in 30 or 15 minutes.

Life drawing is addictive! Unless you have tried it, you’ll never know how difficult it is. Observation is key, but even if you get a figure 99% right, it won’t necessarily come to life. And that is before you introduce any artistic re-interpretation of what you are seeing.

For me, the best portrayers of the human figure were Schiele and Modigliani. They weren’t aiming for a perfect reproduction of the person on paper but were more concerned with putting their own unique stamp on the image. Colour, line, expression, spontaneity. Exciting! Fantastic!
